Bulgaria’s Kundalini returns to Pharmacy Music after the stunning No Name Yet / Hidden double single debut on the imprint in December of last year. This latest EP from him also contains a remix from pioneering DJ of the Athens electronic music scene, Astro-D. Let’s dive right in and see what’s inside.
Expectations were high for this latest release, due to Kundalini‘s over a decade of experience, but I’m happy to say these expectations were more than met. Like other Pharmacy releases, Destination Threshold straddles the line between the individual artist vision and label sound, creating a recognizably Pharmacy track, but preserving the Bulgarian’s unique spin on the production.
A point of interest is the track’s somewhat unusual break, which is created via a sequence akin to a machine powering down. Movie fans will no doubt recognize the ‘Attention, Destination Threshold‘ sample from 2012’s Prometheus. Though the rest of the track’s structure is fairly standard, the FX trickery (especially the gated vocals) spices things up tremendously. All in all, it’s one damn enjoyable slice of psy.
For his take, Astro-D drags things down considerably, giving the track a heavier, darker vibe and an assortment of new vocal samples to compliment the existing ones. The whole thing is very dynamic, and succeeds brilliantly in creating that hypnotic atmosphere psy trance is known for.
If you listen to it carefully, you can even hear Astro’s rework shed its modern psy-trance skin to reveal some strong, Goa-ish vibes. It’s more of a tease than anything else, but as an admirer of the old Goa sound, I couldn’t skip over that detail. You’ll know it when you hear it. 🙂
Kundalini‘s Destination Threshold original, with its accompanying Astro-D rework, is headed for a February 8th Beatport release. Two weeks later, you’ll be able to pick them up from everywhere else. Until then, wrap your ears around the samples.
