The ReWind series exists as merely an aid in the discovery (or rather, rediscovery) of the unintentionally forgotten, or the often overlooked tracks of yesteryear.
I’ve expressed my appreciation for the oldies on numerous occasions before, and today is going to be another one of ’em. You’ll want to flip your calendars back to 1999 for this one.
Seventeen years ago, Belgium’s Global Cuts imprint pushed out what is in my opinion a hidden gem of an EP, entitled Messages. Contained in the boundaries of the 12” were two stunning versions, the more famous Gouryella remix, plus Martin Scullly and Martin Stone (Solange)’s very own 4 AM Trance Mix. The latter of the two seemed highly appropriate, given the time at which I’m writing this post.
Its near 10 minute run time did not intimidate me, as I prefer the longer tracks, so I jumped right in. To grab a hold of the listener, you need a strong intro and this one had it down to a T. The moment that baseline came in, Messages just clicked into place, making my listening session all the more satisfying. It’s not loud, it’s not ‘in your face’, but damn does it make you notice it. The groove is infectious and the progression ticks all the right boxes.
I’ll be honest with you, I don’t know where the French vocal sample comes from, nor am I particularly interested what she’s saying. It does go well with the arrangement though, that’s for sure.
Whether you’re a night owl, or an early bird, here’s a message for you: turn this bloody tune up!
See you next week.🙂
