The ever surprising Research & Development Records presents its newest, and arguably most eclectic package yet. Blending electro, tech house and swing jazz to great effect, Opku‘s triple offering goes way beyond what you’d expect from a combination like this. More details, below.
Right off the bat, the title track shows its electro side, soon enough transitioning through a vocoded vocal sample into a slightly techier arrangement. On its way to the mini-breakdown, Athcoom starts a teasing process of sorts, giving the listener quick flashes of the jazzy element, only to create a grand reveal when one reaches the end of the build-up. I’ve enjoyed the hell out of this cross-genre hybrid, having stopped writing on more than one occasion, just to fully appreciate it.
Eye patches at the ready, we’re going to the ghetto next.
Besides having an awfully interesting name, track number 2 has a progression which is the furthest one can get from boring. Honestly, this thing probably twists and turns more than I do in my sleep, resulting in some absolutely terrific moments. My favourite though, has got to be at the beginning, where Opku combines the electric guitar with some great scratching action. Who knew that besides their passion for epic treasures, Redbeard and his mates were also very skilled with the turntables? They know how to have fun, that’s for sure.
Imagine you’re in the mid 1920s, when jazz was in full swing and everybody and their dog was listening to it. Now, let’s say you’re producing electronic music and have brought your current studio setup back to that time period. True, you would get some weird looks from people, but you’d also be producing something like Gjamfe, taking advantage of the best of both worlds. Not only is this awesomely put together, it’s funky as hell and flows so, so well. One thing is for sure: this would’ve been a hit at your local speakeasy.
If you, like me, have trouble picking a favourite, do yourself a favour, and don’t. Just grab all three Monday, January 25th when the EP comes out. Go forth and sample what’s on offer. 🙂
