[RWD] 00.db – The Dewberry Tree

The ReWind series exists as merely an aid in the discovery (or rather, rediscovery) of the unintentionally forgotten, or the often overlooked tracks of yesteryear.

The chillout side of electronic music hasn’t quite gotten its deserved share in the ReWind spotlight, but things will slowly change in the coming weeks, starting right now. Let’s take a trip back to 2010.

For those not familiar, 00.db is a collaboration between arguably two of the biggest names in the underground trance scene, John 00 Fleming and The Digital Blonde. The project puts the pair’s production expertise to good use, resulting in some tremendously dark and enjoyable anthems.

Creating a worthy follow-up to Heaven & Hell (the duo’s first long player) was never going to be easy, but despite what some might say, Angels & Demons successfully stands as a testament to the versatility and creativity of these two producers, with its split personality approach being one of the key points of interest. While the psy side is worthy of consideration, we’re focusing on the chillout side, as underlined earlier.

Out of all the excellent options, I’ve settled on a track near the end of Disc 2, namely The Dewberry Tree. We start off amidst the thundering sounds of a storm that is about to start, with the howling wolves further accentuating the atmosphere. The baseline slowly rises joined not long after by the distant, tribal sound of drums. As we approach the midpoint, the drums start transitioning proceedings into near film score territory. The ominous vibe of the arrangement gets further emphasized, as the vocal accents, the last piece of this hypnotic musical puzzle, fall into place. The result is an epic 10 minute journey that you’re not gonna forget anytime soon.

See you next week. 🙂
