The ReWind series exists as merely an aid in the discovery (or rather, rediscovery) of the unintentionally forgotten, or the often overlooked tracks of yesteryear.
With the hot summer days gone, you’d think I wouldn’t pick anything relating to this torrid period of the year, but you’d be mistaken. This week, we’re off to this little chunk of land in the middle of the ocean.
Andy Bolleshon, Martin Buttrich and Timo Maas, collectively known as Orinoko hit things off with the funky house vibes of their most well known track, Island. Released in 2000 under German imprint 3 Lanka, the track featured Xanthe Tyler on vocals and came in three versions: Original, Dub and Alternative Dub mixes. Later that year, a white label release featured remixes from Moguai and Saints & Sinners.
In 2001, 3 Lanka put out a vinyl dubbed Island – Thrillseekers Mixes which featured the Club and Dub versions of Steve’s rework and, in October of the same year, Positiva picked up the license. What ended up in spot number 119 of the back catalogue was an eclectic blend of styles with appearances from Moguai, Saints & Sinners, Astro, The Thrillseekers, joined by the the Radio Edit, Original and Alternate mixes of the track.
Mr. Helstrip’s reheat is an encapsulation of that wonderfully melodic sound of the early 2000s, with the effortless sounding synth work and fantastic Matt Appleton provided guitar riff. Part progressive, part balearic, the version you’ll listen to below has all the hallmarks of an epic Sunday evening relaxation soundtrack, with just enough umph to sustain a dance session, if one so desires.
Until next week. enjoy the Thrillseekers Club Mix of Orinoko, Island. 🙂
