Long time readers will not be surprised to see Chris Voro or Active Limbic System separately pop up in an article on the site, but how about if they were to collaborate? Well, joy of joys, they actually did join forces for the newest release on Chris Oblivion‘s freshly formed Old Baby Recordings imprint, so we better take a closer look, don’t you think?
Opening the EP is the superb original of Alien Earth, an atmospheric and hypnotic blast from the past, as modern techniques get fused with that oldschool vibe of Goa to create what the label’s description states as ‘new tracks with an old feeling’. It’s great to hear the filtered acids slowly making more and more of an impact on the track as it progresses, and to see the melodic accents nicely complement the arrangement. The sample in the break is related to a 1972 report from the Astronomy Survey Committee and reads as follows (in case you want to sing along):
More and more scientists feel that contact with other civilizations is no longer something beyond our dreams but a natural event in the history of mankind […]
What follows is a masterful control of the 303s ending in a somewhat different climax than one might expect, which certainly adds to the uniqueness of the track. All in all, a superb modern day rendition of the old Goa sound. But wait, we’re not quite done yet. 🙂
Although it’s the second on the cover, The Source was actually the first of the two to get created, with a slightly longer runtime than its companion production at just over 8 minutes. Also, unlike Alien Earth, this one has a slightly longer break, with only a very short vocal sample, and significantly more focus on the melody. Whereas the first one’s unique point was the climax, I feel like this one excels in the build-up department, with its near ominous atmosphere reminding me to some degree of Man With No Name’s Azymuth.
When I first heard the samples a few months back, I had my target set on the EP opener as a favourite, but having listened to them both plenty more times since then, I’m not sure I can actually pick a favourite anymore. From what I understand, both of them were meant as a bit of a tribute to the old Goa masters and frankly, I think they’re absolutely superb. George and Michalis (aka Active Limbic System) and Chris can be proud of what they’ve done here.
I consider this material a pretty special thing for someone to release in today’s scene, which is why I saw fit to post it on a special day for me. I stepped away for a second from my birthday celebration to put the finishing touches on this article, an article I’ve been itching to push the publish button on for some time. I hope you folks like this as much as I do.
If you want to get it, it’ll be out tomorrow, April 20th. Until then, enjoy being teased by those two samples. 😀
