Last time we took a stroll through the hallways of the Asylum, we came face to face with Indecent Noise’s three headed pet, Cerberus. Now, it’s time to meet another one of the friendly fellows that reside in the mental institution, Matt Bowdidge‘s Psycho. Let’s carefully approach this one.
Although the artwork style has changed, Mental Asylum Records’ approach to trance has remained unchanged: a predominantly energetic sound delivery, with highly emphasized acids and baselines, plus fast tempos. Matt’s newest original certainly falls into this category, but like a good few tracks in recent years, it sort of blurs the line between what were previously very distinct substyles of trance. One might consider Psycho as either a harder edged uplifter or a more melodic tech trancer, something I personally enjoy a lot, if done properly.
As I’ve said in other posts, I’m one of those weird people who enjoys listening to how a track builds, partly because it’s a learning experience (I’m a curious person) and partly because approaching a track like a story gives me a much higher reward as a listener. If you just skip to the build / climax, you’ll miss the nice little Portal 2 sample Matt has included in the break, for the discerning gamers among you folks. What I also like is the absence of any pitch bend, a ‘feature’ many seem to be very fond of these days. At the end of the day, Psycho is equal parts tech and uplifting, combining the best of both to great effect. This is no doubt my favourite Mental Asylum release since Cerberus.
For those of you eager to get it, March 30th signals the Beatport release from the Asylum of Matt Bowdidge’s Psycho. After a two week probation, the track will also hit other digital download stores on April 13th. Check out the sample below and see what you think. 🙂
It was part of an initiative to investigate how well test subjects could solve problems when they were catapulted into space.
