The ReWind series exists as merely an aid in the discovery (or rather, rediscovery) of the unintentionally forgotten, or the often overlooked tracks of yesteryear.
For this week’s ReWind feature, I’ve decided to focus on the work of Switzerland-based DJ & Producer Ralph K. Freund. As you’ll see below, he’s a very versatile and very prolific musician.
Alongside his friend Juergen Kassel (aka Jay Kerner). he formed Rastaliens back in 1998, and has since released four albums (the most recent one being ‘Back On Earth’ in 2007) and three EPs under that alias. Fans of psytrance will probably be immediately familiar with their debut EP Unidentified Species / Freak Booster, along with the number of others that have since been put out.
2003 kicked off Ralph’s solo psytrance project as Braincell under which he created no fewer than five albums (the most recent being released in 2013). If you’re interested in that sound, check out his debut album Universal Language from 2005.
The fun didn’t stop here, as 2007 brought yet another new alias by Mr. Freund, this time showcasing his more progressive side. Solar Spectrum has had a tremendous run as well, with 4 albums and 6 EPs under that name. For Solar Spectrum I’ll also point you to the debut album, Planes Of Existence.
You’d think 3 aliases would be more than enough for anyone to handle, but it seems like it doesn’t quite cut it for this creative producer.
Unknown Reality represents the Chillout / Ambient side of Ralph’s sound, what he describes as a return to his roots as a guitar player and percussionist after nearly 20 years of producing Progressive and Psytrance.
Hauntingly airy vocal sweeps, deep melodies and gradually evolving soundscapes are the staple of any Unknown Reality production, but I wanted to focus on one track in particular. Taken from his freebie EP Moments, this week’s feature is the superb original mix of Dream. Have a listen to the sample below, grab your free copy and support Ralph’s other tracks on Bandcamp.
See you next week. 🙂
