Simon Bostock – Do You Know / This Time

After taking a little time off, Simon Bostock returns with some very interesting new material, as February 2nd brings his debut Monster Force EP into the spotlight. For this to be even more effective of a return, you get a double dose of highly melodic trance, in the form of Do You Know and its companion track, This Time.

Do You Know

I’ll say right off the bat that I thoroughly enjoyed the clean intro, with the superb base and filtered acid line, which led me into Do You Know‘s supremely melodic breakdown.

Some have said there’s a sample from Salt Tank’s Eugina in there, but honestly, that’s simply nitpicking. I wasn’t sure what to expect, because I hadn’t heard anything from Simon for quite a while, but I’m pleased to say he’s absolutely hit the nail on the head with this one.

Pure, if somewhat sad overall, the melody is brought from the serene beginnings of the break, all the way to Do You Know‘s climax, in an exhilarating ride that’s reminiscent of the glourious days of ye olde trance. The climax isn’t quite as powerful as you’ll hear in other tracks, but that’s refreshing to me. The snare rolls aren’t as loud, which is another plus, and the melody has time to breathe and properly unfold.

I’ve heard in the past tracks that have been ruined by their climaxes, but not this one.I’m probably happier than even Simon with how it turned out. Seriously, what a track.

This Time

Not to be overshadowed by its companion, the AA side This Time brings a lush atmosphere of its own into the mix. You know, just in case you weren’t awestruck enough by the lead track, this one gives you another shot of highly melodic sound to round off the EP.

Despite the rather more simple approach on the melodic side, This Time has no problem driving home its message, with the goose bump-inducing pads and arpeggiated lead melody. A similarly darker tone overall, but very clean arrangement and tight sound control give the track an epic feel, without the need to resort to a loud climax.

It’s more of a rare event these days, but I’m once again in difficulty because I can’t choose between the two. Sure, most will likely prefer Do You Know, but in my view, both deserve your attention. It’s not often you get two properly high-caliber melodic trancers on the same EP, and you people should definitely take a look at this come Monday.

Simon Bostock‘s superb double track EP is out February 2nd, exclusively on Beatport under Monster Force. Have a listen and hear for yourself just how great these two sound. 🙂
