Wasting no time at all, Alan & John over at Research & Development Records manage to sneak in yet another release from the imprint, just in time for New Year’s Eve. The brand new original comes from Greek producer Chris Voro, and is joined by two unmistakable reinterpretations from Timewave and John Dopping.
After flying the psybreaks flag most of the year, Chris showcases the trancier side of his sound, with the stunning Penumbra. This moody prog-trancer is powered along by a very present goa-sounding base, tight drum work and the all important blend of acids and melody that is one the high points of any Voro production. The track effortlessly twists and turns, proving that there’s a great amount of enjoyment that can be had from listening to a quality piece of progressive. The vocal sample just adds that extra piece to what was already my favourite version from the EP. Amazing.
John Dopping Shadow
If you’ve listened to anything by John this year (oh, I don’t know, his debut album for example) this will be immediately familiar. He’s toned the acids down a tad, and added a very interesting arpeggiated melody on top, for the extra variety twist. If near the beginning, the rework is a little on the ‘happier’side of the spectrum, it progressively returns to the slightly heavier, but still very enjoyable atmosphere of the original. This one has been getting quite a few replays from me, and it should from you too. Great one by John.
Last, but most certainly not least, Timewave sticks to the progressive side, but switches things around a bit, opting for a much lengthier, more chill-like break, with sporadic, reverbed and delayed melodic snippets, and a much slower reintroduction of elements. The vocal sample takes a bit of a back seat, but the glorious melody takes center stage for yet another exquisite re-imagining of Chris‘ original. Really enjoyable.
I said my favourite of the bunch was the original, but truth be told, they all are absolutely amazing, and you can’t go wrong by picking either of the three. What’s absolutely clear is that Research & Development has started out strong and will be continuing its streak of quality over quantity releases for many months to come.
